Merry Christmas to all our friends. Please read my Christmas Story:
Who Is Santa Claus?
- by Toti Verzosa
The little girl was begging in the streets of the old city. It was almost Christmas Eve and she had not yet collected enough money to buy a meal for her poor mother, father, brother, and sister. If life was hard before, it was even harder now as many people had lost their jobs because of the pandemic. No one had money to share with a street child like her.
Brutut, the intelligent dog, had known about the little girl’s plight. So, he started taking walks alongside the girl to keep her safe and show her where the few, rich people were having parties. He thought that at least these rich people might pity her and share some leftovers with her. But no! These people simply ignored her as she begged – with looks of disgust at her dirty clothes and smudged face. Brutut could not believe how people had become so uncaring of this poor, hungry girl! And so, Brutus prayed in his mind for some help from God for the little girl. And with a tender look from his eyes, Brutut sent a message to the girl for her to pray as well. And she did.
As Brutut and the girl neared the end of their prayers, a beautiful ice cream truck suddenly stopped beside them on the road. Out came an old, chubby man with a big, white beard in a red suit. The man smiled at the girl and Brutut and opened the back of his truck. There were toys and packs of clothes and food filling up the whole inside of the truck. The man spoke:” I heard your prayer, little girl and Brutut. Get as much of the food, clothes, and toys you want for your family. Tonight is the birthday of a special boy and I am celebrating it by sharing all of these to anyone in need as part of his birthday party!”.
After getting all the toys, food and clothes needed by the girl’s family, Brutut and the girl were about to thank the old man. But he had gone into his truck and the truck had driven away quickly.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a father was working extremely hard late at night this Christmas Eve. He was struggling to finish a job that he needed the money from to pay the rent for his apartment where he lived with his wife, four children and mother. His boss was a cruel woman who did not care about his health or family. If he did not finish the job by midnight, he would not get paid. Because he was so tired, he could not think and move fast enough to meet the midnight deadline. When Agila, the watchful eagle, saw this from the sky, he felt sorry, so he brought Father Jose to help the man finish his job. As good a thinker and fast a mover as Father Jose was, however, the job was impossible to finish. So, both the man and Father Jose started yawning and were about to give up. Then Father Jose thought otherwise and encouraged and led the man in prayer to God for help.
As Father Jose and the man finished praying, a large truck suddenly stopped by the man’s office. Out of the truck came an old, chubby man with a large white beard in a red suit with 10 other men and women in similar red suits. The old man said:” We don’t want you to miss the birthday of an incredibly special boy tonight. We will help you finish the job so that you will get your pay.” They then proceeded to help the man and Father Jose finish the job one minute to midnight. At midnight, as the man and Father Jose were about to thank the old man and his assistants for their help, they all rushed into the truck and the truck left quickly.
Meanwhile, in another city, an old woman was in the hospital. She was very sick and was worried she could not go home to her family for Christmas Eve. Her sons and daughters were by her bedside praying and watching over her. Outside the hospital room’s window, Whisper and Speed were watching the scene. Whisper was using her mind waves to make the old woman forget her pain and relax. Then, an old, chubby man with a big beard in a doctor’s suit entered the woman’s room. He then said to the woman’s children: “Don’t worry. I am the special doctor here. I will send your mother with you home healthy again tonight.”. With these words, the old man touched the old woman’s forehead then left the room. A few minutes later, a group of doctors and nurses came to check on the old woman. They were so astonished that the old woman was fully well and healthy, with no sign of her previous illness. The children told them about the old, chubby doctor who came by earlier. The doctors and nurses did not know any man who fitted their description of this old man. After a final check-up, the old woman went home healthy to celebrate Christmas Eve with her children.
That midnight, Brutut, Agila, Whisper the telepathic koala, Speed the bright kangaroo and Father Jose went to the Auxilium in Via headquarters. It was Niño’s (the Child Jesus') birthday so the whole team was having a modest sharing of food and small gifts. As they were enjoying the food, Brutut, Agila, Whisper, Speed and Father Jose shared their strange but wonderful experiences that night. They then asked Niño if he knew who the man was and who his assistants were. Niño smiled and answered: “Oh, that was my Dad! You know…God the Father. He travels around the world every Christmas Eve to celebrate my birthday by giving people who are in desperate need what they need if they pray for it. He wants to teach people to have faith and to pray even for impossible things. Some people call him Santa Claus. He never runs out of gifts and has this high-speed flying truck he drives around the world. And the assistants you saw – they are angels who sometimes take the form of reindeers for fun!”.
So, the secret is out about Santa!

Jane was a young lady. She led a happy, carefree life. She was in love with Damon. Because of her love, she believed Damon’s promises of a future with him and gave herself to Damon. And because she did, one day, she suddenly realised she was carrying Damon’s baby in her womb.
This drove Jane into panic. What would she do with the baby when it came out? She was not ready to be a mother. How could she fulfil her dreams of finishing her studies and getting a good job and eventually getting rich? Surely, raising the baby would stop all these plans. Who would help her? Damon had left her hurriedly when he found out her condition. He did not want the responsibility. Jane spiralled into fear, loneliness, despair and depression.
One night, Jane met a woman in a park who called herself Serpentina. And they talked:
Serpentina: “I know of your problem Jane. I can help you.”
Jane: “How could you do anything at all? My life is in pieces.”
Serpentina: “I can make you whole again.”
Jane: “How?”.
Serpentina: “Let me take your child. It will be painless and all your worries will go away.”
Jane: “What will you do with it?”
Serpentina: “I will give it a quiet, eternal rest. It will not suffer a future of uncertainty. It will not even know because it does not have a soul yet until it is born.”
Jane: “Sounds reasonable. When can you do it?”
Serpentina: “Tomorrow, the night of the new moon when nobody can see us”.
And so, Jane agreed.
The next night, Jane went back to the park. Serpentina was nowhere to be found. Instead, she met a girl who called herself Mary. Mary was glowing in a warm light that lit the park as if there was a full moon. And they talked:
Mary: “You look like you are unhappy. Why?”
And Jane told Mary her story.
Mary: “I can help you”.
Jane: “How?”
Mary: “Hear my story:
There was once a woman who was travelling a long way back to her home. She was carrying a puppy and a small bag of seeds given as gifts by her friend. Because these were heavy, she thought of leaving them on the road. First, the puppy pleaded with her for her not to leave him on the road. He promised to keep quiet and still. The puppy also promised her his unending loyalty in return. Next, the seeds in her bag also pleaded with her for her to not throw them away. They said they would also keep still. They also promised her their unending kindness in exchange. The woman, after hearing these, felt sympathy for both because they promised so much for the little burden they gave her of being carried along.
After weeks of travelling, the woman was so tired she fell asleep on the road. She woke late in the night. Suddenly, she found herself surrounded by 5 wolves. They were hungry and wanted to eat her. She was so frightened and desperately cried and screamed. Suddenly, a very big dog rescued her and scared the wolves away. When the wolves were gone, the dog spoke and said he was the puppy and would grow big anytime to protect her. And so, the woman slept soundly the rest of the night.
In the morning, the woman woke up very hungry and thirsty. She felt she would die from hunger and felt very weak. Suddenly, as she stood up, she saw she was surrounded by many trees and plants – all with ripe fruits, nuts, and vegetables. She ate and drank the juices voraciously until she was full. The trees and plants then spoke and told her they were the seeds in her bag and that they would turn into plants and trees and feed her whenever she was hungry. She then rested and fell asleep the rest of the day.
And so, the woman continued her journey without fear or hunger until she reached her home. And she kept the puppy and bag of seeds forever. As she grew older, the puppy grew to be a very big dog who protected her and her family from wolves and other bad animals. The seeds also grew into a forest that gave her much food and water that fed her and her family always.”
Mary then said to Jane: “Your child is a gift from God, like the puppy and the bag of seeds were to the woman. Your fear, loneliness, despair and depression will all go away when the child is born and grows up. God will bless you if you decide to keep and raise the child. This I promise to you.” With these words, Mary ran away and disappeared.
Jane believed Mary and refused the offer of Serpentina. She gave birth to the child and raised him. The child grew to be a powerful leader of men and a hardworking son. Her son took good care of Jane and protected her and gave her a life of comfort. Jane even finished school and worked to help her son lead the community where they lived. And Jane remembered the story of the puppy and the bag of seeds and forever remembered and was thankful to Mary.
Mary, the Mother of God, endured the trial of bearing a child under unusual conditions. But her faith in God's word gave her strength.

The town of Project 6 in Quezon City in the Philippines is a busy place of old and new houses. Like any regular Philippine town, it has a church, a town plaza, street basketball courts, a town market, pharmacies, a few fast food restaurants and many small variety “sari-sari” stores. The people are a mix of old town families and renting employees working around Metro Manila. It has one distinctive feature – every morning at 5 am, a group of devotees parade a statue of the Virgin Mary while praying the rosary along the main streets Road 8 and Road 10.
It was the first of May and Project 6 was celebrating the annual parade called “Flores de Mayo” – a parade of young women in gowns and flower-adorned bamboo arches as one highlight of the upcoming fiesta honouring the Lady of Mount Carmel, its patron saint. It was a joyful parade as town folk cheered the local young ladies they knew in the parade, some even following the parade across town. The press was there too from ABS-CBN, the nation’s dominant network. Reporter Vida Santa Maria was looking to interview one of the ladies in the parade. She was intrigued by one pretty lady who looked quite humble and wore a simple blue gown. She caught up and started walking alongside the lady with her camera man and started the interview:
Vida: “Hi there, what’s your name young lady?”
Lady: “Mary.”
Vida: “How do you feel about this parade?”
Lady: “I am feeling both happy and sad?”
Vida: “Why?”
Lady: “I feel happy because people still find time to celebrate in their lives. I feel sad because they do not know what they are actually celebrating.”
Vida: “What do you mean?”
Lady: “People are lost and lonely, despite all the ways they can now talk everywhere using their cell phones. They forget that a truthful friendship does not depend on talking to many people at any time, like in Twitter and Facebook. They forget that sending a short text message is not enough to express the range of emotions involved in friendship and love. They forget that it is so easy to lie and hide behind lies in social media. Yet, they spend most of their time on their cell phones rather than meet each other in person.”
Vida: “There may be truth to that. But why does that lead to them not knowing what they celebrate?”
Lady: “Because they are driven by their medium, not the message. Like this parade, even with many photos, selfies, and postings, do they realize that this parade celebrates the beauty and value of human life? As flowers bloom in May, life is born. And like in a parade as the flowers go through town appreciated, life must be valued every step on its journey on earth. An infant must be cared for and taught good things through childhood. A teen must be loved and prepared for the challenges of adulthood. An adult must use faith, strength and truth to guide the young. And the old must be cared for and supported by the young in their twilight years. But instead, many infants are killed before even being born. Young children are left to beg for their food. Teens are left unguided to take big risks with their lives by uncaring parents with no time for them. Adults lose faith and use their strength in a relentless search for financial success hoping this will make them happy. The old are left by themselves and are thought as burdens. If only people started to value life as they value flowers, hunger, poverty, ignorance, crime, injustice and early death through disease would be gone from towns like Project 6. And the scourge of loneliness would be eliminated as people celebrate life everyday – life as given by God.”
Vida was stunned by Mary’s responses. She was obviously a very mature young lady, in contrast to her aura of humility and simplicity. Vida stood frozen by the road. By the time she realized this, the parade had moved on quite a distance. She ran after the parade looking to talk to Mary further. As she caught up, she could not find Mary. She asked the camera man to check if he got the interview recorded. He checked and he did.
The next day, at the fiesta, she asked the parade organisers about Mary. No one seemed to know her. In fact, no one could recall any lady in a blue gown. She showed them footage of the recorded interview. Still, no one recognized her. The organizers checked and could not explain why Mary was even there at all because nobody knew her in Project 6, nobody registered her for the parade, and nobody could recall her. But there was the footage. It wasn’t a fake. It had no explanation.

Once upon a time, there lived a king of a wonderful kingdom
who was nearing the end of his life. In spite of all his wealth
and power, he was not happy for one reason: he felt he had not
yet found the true meaning of life.
The king had four sons. He was proud of them. His sons though
worried about his constant melancholy. So, one day, they asked
him what they could do to help. The king, giving up on his pride,
asked his sons to search for the meaning of life.
The first prince searched on the first day for the meaning of
life. As he rode his horse through the meadows, he accidentally
fell into a bed of flowers. Picking himself up, he could not help
but look at the flowers. The flowers were very beautiful with
different colors, shapes, and sizes. In this moment of enchant-
ment, he felt he had found the meaning of life. He rushed back to
the castle. Excitedly, he told his father, the king, that he had
found the meaning of life. He told his father his encounter with
the flowers and said that the meaning of life was in beauty. The
king was very relieved and felt better.
The second son, not to be outdone, rode on the second day. He
came upon a valley overlooked by several tall cliffs. His eye was
caught by a bird gracefully gliding between the cliffs. In an
instant, he felt he had realized the meaning of life. He rode
like the wind back home. Upon seeing his father, he related what
he had seen and said he knew what the meaning of life was -- that
it was in freedom, as gracefully shown by the bird. The king was
very happy and felt much, much better.
The third prince, wanting to finally rid his father of his
illness, rode on the third day. He searched until nightfall. When
he was about to give up, his weariness was rewarded by a mystical
sight: a star was shining brightly in the heavens and illuminat-
ing all the land. He recklessly rode back to the castle and awoke
the king. He told his story and said that he had found the mean-
ing of life: wisdom -- for wisdom, like a star, illuminates the
mind of a man. The king was very proud and slept soundly the rest
of the night.
The morning after, just when the king was contentedly praising
his sons, his fourth son, the child prince, volunteered to
continue the search. Seeing how little his child was, he would
not allow the child and laughed. The little prince cried. In
sympathy, he finally let the little kid go -- but only within the
safe part of the kingdom near the castle grounds.
And so, the fourth prince started his little search. By
twilight, he came back and related to his father, the king, a
strange story. He said that as he was searching, he met a little
boy crying in the fields. The boy had a thorn in his foot. As he
helped the boy take the thorn off his foot, the boy smiled and
the smile reached deep into the little prince's heart. This, he
insisted, was the meaning of life -- what he felt at that moment.
The king was happy for the little prince's effort. However, he
was worried that the child had been tricked by an elf or dwarf.
So, he vowed to personally see that his son was safe in his room
each night before he went to bed.
But each night he went to see the young prince in his room, a
strange thing happened. He would spy his son talking to a bare-
footed little boy in ragged but white-clean clothes. How could
this boy have entered the castle without any of the guards know-
ing? After some time, his son and the boy would hand-in-hand jump
out of a high window. After rushing to the window, the king would
find no trace of the two in the grounds below. However, in the
morning, he would again find his son soundly sleeping in his room
alone. This went on and on each night. The king wanted to ask his
son about this but hesitated for fear he might actually be going
out of his mind himself.
But there were other pressing matters too. The chief botanist
of the kingdom reported each day that the flowers in the kingdom
were multiplying quickly. The chief zoologist each day also
marvelled at the increasing number of birds in the kingdom. The
chief astronomer seriously warned of a new phenomenon in the
heavens: every night, a new star was born in the skies. All these
were deemed to be mystical. Candidly, the king mentioned to the
chief minister that even he had a strange story to tell. He then
related the strange nightly disappearance of his youngest prince.
In horror, the chief minister, thinking the kingdom was being
overthrown by elves and dwarfs through the innocence of the
little prince, advised the king to finally confront his youngest
child. He said that the mystical events occurring were a sign of
this.
And so, the king finally asked his son why he disappeared
every night. The son, with so much innocence in his young face,
said that he would answer his father's question the next morning
-- at daybreak, by the sea.
Anxiously, the king, with a handful of assistants walked to
the seashore at daybreak the following day. He found his son,
with the little boy he disappeared with every night, playing. As
he sat near the two, his son spoke: "Father, I have found for you
the meaning of life. This little boy has helped me in finding it.
Every night, we walk along the meadows and find another little
boy or girl who has a thorn in the foot. I take out the thorn as
I did before. As I do, the child gives me a smile that makes my
heart smile and laugh. My friend has told me that what I feel is
love -- and, that life, is love. And would you believe, my friend
gives me, for every child I help, one more flower, one more bird,
and one more star for our kingdom?".
The king was touched and tears rolled down his face. However,
he wondered to his son why, if this was indeed true, that he
could not see the other children. Where were they -- the many
children the young prince had helped? The young prince answered:
"Father, look at the sea...". As the king turned his head toward
the direction of the sea, he found, where the sea was supposed to
be, instead a multitude of children singing a beautiful song. At
this moment, the meaning of life was born in his heart.
The young prince embraced his father and said: "Father, I must
leave now. They want me to join in their singing!". And so, the
young prince joined the multitude of children singing. The king
listened till nightfall and fell asleep with the beautiful song
in his ears.
When the king and his aides awoke the next morning, the young
prince and the children were gone. The sea was back in its
place.
The king was a wise man. He understood where his son went. He
knew his son was happy. How did he know? He did because on the
same December night each year, he would go to the seashore and
find instead a multitude of children singing -- and the young
prince was one of them!!!
The Son of God was born in a manger to refugee parents. Let this remind us to be kind to those seeking refuge from pain and persecution.
